108 feelings of afrofuturism
featuring a guy called gerald & abu qadim haqq

This November, Vinyl Harvest in Luxembourg will host 108 Feelings of Afrofuturism, a transformative audiovisual experience exploring black musical evolution from the deep roots of jazz to the outer galaxies of techno. This is an unprecedented meeting for electronic music culture with two originators performing live in-store.

A Guy Called Gerald’s innovation was central to the formative years of the UK acid-house and jungle movements and his musical output has consistently challenged expectations and industry constraints. Abu Qadim Haqq’s iconic illustrations brought new dimensions to the techno movement in Detroit, telling the visual story with Underground Resistance, Drexciya, Juan Atkins, Transmat and Metroplex.

108 is a sacred number which symbolises continuity and the eternal rhythm of creation. This intimate, one-off event will document a cycle of black innovation and influence with 108 definitive and curated records from A Guy Called Gerald and a unique performance alongside Haqq painting live. Limited art package tickets include one of the 108 records, each with a signed reimagined AI artwork print from Haqq.

An after party will be held at Ground nightclub from 10pm-6am with A Guy Called Gerald and friends.

A Guy Called Gerald

A Guy Called Gerald

An iconic name in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald stands out for consistent innovation, excellence and refusal to compromise. A Guy Called Gerald kick started Europe’s acid house frenzy, releasing the first UK acid house record, the ’88 classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and 'Pacific State' and went on to lay down the blueprint for jungle/drum n bass. Nine albums and 25 years of independence later, he continues to push the boundaries of electronic dance music, touring worldwide, bringing his "true school" flavour to a world overloaded with pop pap. He has remixed David Bowie, Cabaret Voltaire, Black Uhuru, Finley Quaye, Lamb, Tricky and The Stone Roses. Gerald’s own productions and refusal to plough anyone’s furrow but his own have marked him out. A Guy Called Gerald played a huge role in the birth of British dance music as you know it today and continues to explore what is possible both in the studio and in the club with his "Live in Session" performances.

Since 2012, he has been working on a side project with Graham Massey (808 State) called REBUILD, performing live jams on Roland machines. “How Long Is Now” was released on Bosconi Records in 2012. A live album Silent Sound Spread Spectrum followed from the Society of Sound Series – a collaboration between Bowers & Wilkins and Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in 2013. At Glastonbury Festival in 2016 and 2017 he performed on Funktion One’s Experimental Soundfield at The Glade – a six stack Ambisonic full-sphere surround sound technique that is ‘capable of recreating accurate three-dimensional sound stages from original recordings’. In the studio, he is busy recording a steady stream of releases on his own digital label. He continues to be in demand worldwide with his Live In Session shows using a vast patchwork of past, present and future experimenting effortlessly between early acid house through abstract tech breaks into dreamscapes of futuristic oscillations.

Live In Session is "a new way to present the music live based around the idea of being in the centre of the dancefloor and at eye level... I am looking to create a space which mimics the studio environment because I would be in the centre of the dancefloor so I can monitor everything around me and be at the same level – eye-level with the presumed dancer. This way it makes it easy for me to create the atmosphere and the rhythm suitable for the individual dancefloor. Kind of like an open kitchen in a restaurant – it’s an open kitchen in a club bringing the food to the people instantly – as soon as it’s produced it’s already on the dancefloor. What I’m looking for in 2015 is sound reproduction in the clubs being taken a lot more seriously than in the past." A Guy Called Gerald“

UK club culture has many people to thank for transforming the imported sound of America into the biggest youth movement my generation has experienced, but nobody else has redefined it so much with the character and soul of Britishness, creating music for both the feet and the head, and indelibly altering our cultural landscape.” - DJ MAGAZINE

No other British artist involved in dance music since the Acid House explosion has produced as many important records as A Guy Called Gerald. From Voodoo Ray (1988) the song that put British House on the map, to Black Secret Technology (1995), the album that definitively showed that Jungle was capable of full-length album statements, Gerald Simpson has consistently explored virgin territory, paving the way for lesser musicians to take the credit.” - The Rough Guide to Drum n Bass

Abu Qadim Haqq

Abu Qadim Haqq

Born December 24, 1968, also known as Haqq and The Ancient, is an American visual artist raised in Detroit, Michigan. Haqq's artwork has been featured on records by Detroit techno artists such as Juan Atkins, Metroplex, Derrick May, Transmat, Underground Resistance, Kevin Saunderson, and Carl Craig.

Abdul Qadim Haqq has been serving the techno music community through Techno Visual Art since 1989, inspiring fans worldwide. He completed his first work for Derrick May's record label Transmat in October 1989. Later that year, Haqq met Mike Banks and Underground Resistance, including Drexciya, Gerald Mitchell, and DJ Rolando. Haqq, founder of Third Earth Visual Arts, bases his futuristic concepts on time travel.

His love for fantasy art was inspired by childhood activities, including watching sci-fi and Japanese animation. Haqq majored in graphic illustration at the College for Creative Studies, formerly known as the Center for Creative Studies, in Detroit.

A prolific and highly respected Detroit techno artist, Abdul Haqq shares a selection of personal favourites and undisputed Detroit techno classics from the archives of Underground Resistance, Carl Craig, Derrick May, Jeff Mills, and Suburban Knight in his book ‘Technanomicron.’ Over the years, Haqq has created a wide variety of artwork for these recording artists and their associated labels.

This artist influenced many musicians and the visual arts worldwide through his work and presence. He passively and peacefully transmitted the true underground spirit on a quantum level. From Robert Hood, when discovering his sound signature to an unknown record store builder on the other side of the world, he interconnects the entire movement with excellent guidance and profound depth of knowledge.

The AFTERPARTY

GROUND club

Tucked away in Luxembourg City’s Gare district, GROUND has become a key address for underground electronic music and contemporary club culture. More than just a venue, it’s a space dedicated to sound exploration and late-night energy.

Atmosphere & Music

GROUND is unapologetically underground — a place for techno, house, and drum & bass rather than radio hits. The focus is on raw sound and community, not glamour. The sound system is described as “humble but effective,” and the lighting minimal and precise — everything serves the music.
